Certified Autism Peer Specialist (CAPS)
The CAPS program pairs individuals with autism with a trained Community Autism Peer Specialist. The program, using the Peer Support model, builds on each person’s individualized treatment plan to help them grow into a more independent person.
A CAPS is a person on the autism spectrum who is trained in peer support through a state-approved program. CAPS provide one-on-one support, using their lived experience to promote their peer’s individuality, self-advocacy, self-confidence, and participation in community activities.
CAPS is a program of PHMC subsidiary The Center for Autism.
- Trained CAPS offer support with goal planning, self-knowledge, communication and relationships, self-care, and more
- CAPS may also connect families to support with employment, finances and budgeting, travel training, and other life skills
