Communities nationwide are joining this week in celebration to honor the critical role of Nurse Practitioners (NP) who are championing the health of America’s patients. The theme this year is “NPs: Rising to Meet the Needs of Patients,” and it couldn’t be more fitting as NPs continue rising to meet the needs of patients every day with compassion, skill, and expertise.
PHMC programs and subsidiary nurses care for patients across a number of different settings, including our six federally qualified health centers, substance use disorder treatment programs, homeless shelters, residential programs and directly in the community supporting families. Our nurses work to support new mothers, strengthen families and promote family health and education. PHMC subsidiary National Nurse-Led Care Consortium continues to advance nurse-led health care through policy, advocacy, programming to reduce health disparities and meet people’s primary and health care needs.
NPs assess patients, order and interpret tests, make diagnoses and provide treatment, including prescribing medications. NPs practice in clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, urgent care centers, nursing homes and private practices across the country. At PHMC, our NPs undertake a public health role — developing relationships, addressing the needs of vulnerable and higher-risk patients, addressing the social determinants of health, and bringing meaningful change in the lives of our patients. They are called on to play the role of coach, health care professional, friend, social worker and so much more. Their tireless work and dedication brings hope and optimism to individuals, families and communities every day.
