Public Health Management Corporation welcomes new COO
PHILADELPHIA—Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC) welcomes Wayne Pendleton in the newly-created role of Chief Operating Officer. “PHMC is excited to welcome Wayne and all he brings to the organization” says president and CEO Richard Cohen, “as we create the new role of Chief Operating Officer. We look at this new position as a starting point to re-envisioning our structure in response to rapid growth and planning for the second forty years serving the region.”
Before coming to PHMC Pendleton, a recognized leader in pioneering models of healthcare, developed a specialized healthcare-consulting firm while serving as executive director of a developing PACE program and homecare and hospice agency with South Jersey Healthcare. For the last 10 years, Pendleton has provided organizations with strategic guidance and operational advances.
Most recently, Pendleton has focused his consulting efforts on partnering with healthcare entities interested in sponsoring the nationally-acclaimed Medicare PACE program, an area on which he has collaborated with PHMC. Pendleton also has served as CEO of an award-winning PACE program in the Philadelphia area sponsored by Penn Nursing and as a senior manager at Philadelphia Corporation for Aging. Pendleton earned a bachelor of science in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and a master of social administration from Temple University. He is a Pennsylvania Licensed Social Worker, a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers, and distinguished as an Advanced Social Worker in Gerontology.
In separate news, PHMC announces the retirement of its senior vice president, John Loeb, one of the organization’s founders. “Everyone at PHMC will greatly miss John’s insight, leadership and presence,” says Cohen. “He has been instrumental in spurring and guiding the agency’s growth from a small, experimental, federally funded program to the nearly $180 million organization it is today.”
Loeb joined a handful of public health visionaries in 1971 to create Public Health Management Corporation, where he began as a community organizer, served 10 years as deputy executive director and since then has held the position of senior vice president. Loeb pioneered what is now the widely valued Community Health Data Base. He provided leadership in framing PHMC’s answers to homelessness, behavioral health services for women and adolescents and the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
“My decision to retire is the culmination of a long exploration on which my wife and I embarked several years ago,” says Loeb. “I count myself as incredibly lucky to have worked in the field of public health in a truly wonderful organization with exceptional colleagues and so many community partners. I’ve had a great career here. My next chapter begins with a move to New Orleans. Although it is difficult to move from Philadelphia, a city we love, we look forward to our next adventure, in which both of us look forward to new beginnings in the New Orleans arts community.”
Loeb will remain at PHMC through the end of 2011. “I am continuing to work with Richard Cohen, Wayne Pendleton and the rest of the leadership team, to help ensure as smooth a transition as possible,” he says.
