Child Asthma Link Line Wins National Praise

Health Promotion Council's Child Asthma Link Line recently received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Exemplary Award for its leadership and commitment to comprehensive asthma care.

Developed by the Philadelphia Allies Against Asthma Coalition, Child Asthma Link Line is a free, community-based telephone center that integrates and helps coordinate medical appointments, asthma education and other services for families affected by asthma. Child Asthma Link Line also helps uninsured families obtain health insurance.

Linda Creed and Rising Sun
Provide Free Breast Screenings

On March 27, PHMC affiliate Linda Creed and PHMC's Rising Sun Health Center partnered to provide local uninsured and underinsured women with free clinical breast exams and mammograms and breast education information. Linda Creed volunteers joined staff from Rising Sun and Fox Chase Cancer Center, one of several hospitals that participates in Linda Creed's free screening program, to provide services to 32 women at the Northeast Philadelphia health center. "The barriers facing un- and underinsured women are many and we are committed to finding innovative ways to address these barriers and promote early detection of breast cancer," says Donna Duncan, executive director of Linda Creed. "Rising Sun serves a vulnerable population and we decided to partner to serve those women."

Lifting Spirits at PHMC Care Clinic

Directions_MAC_th.gifIn March, about 30 female HIV/AIDS patients at PHMC Care Clinic received makeovers from MAC Cosmetics. Five stylists from MAC's King of Prussia store provided the women with makeovers, styling lessons and giveaways as part of MAC's Good Spirits program, which strives to improve the spirits of HIV/AIDS patients by boosting self-confidence about physical appearance. It is funded by the MAC AIDS fund, which has raised over $135 million since 1994 to benefit HIV/AIDS patients through various programs. PHMC Care Clinic provides primary health care to HIV/AIDS patients including a women's clinic that offers OB/GYN and social support services.
