17 beneficiaries receive over $800,000 to support local public health initiatives

PHILADELPHIA, PA— Public Health Fund, an affiliate of Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC), a nonprofit public health institute that creates and sustains healthier communities, has announced its 2013 grant winners, totaling $834,938 to 17 beneficiaries.

"This year's grant winners exemplify the mission and vision of the Public Health Fund, which is to improve the health of the Delaware Valley community through innovative and effective public health initiatives," said Anne Callan, Chief Operating Officer, Public Health Fund. "We are particularly excited about this year's initiatives, which promote systems thinking across our region both externally and internally within PHMC. We are proud to acknowledge each of them."

The winning organizations and amounts include:

Benefits Data Trust, "Referrals for Enrollment in Public Assistance" - $20,000Clarifi, "Feasibility Assessment for Financial Services at Nurse-managed Clinics" - $25,000Education-Plus, Inc., "School Health Clinic" - $50,000Mazzoni Center, "Women & Transmen Cancer Screenings" - $10,000Metropolitan Career Center, "Strategic Growth & Expansion" – $90,000Out of School Time (OST) & Health Promotion Council, "Healthy Living Standards in OST Programs" - $50,000Philadelphia Education Fund, "College Access Pipeline" - $50,000American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania, "Expansion of RESPECT Program" - $100,000St. Christopher's Foundation for Children, "Ronald McDonald Care Mobile" - $25,000Turning Points for Children, "Families and Schools Together" - $50,000WHYY, "Multimedia Health & Science Reporting" - $100,000

In addition, a portion of the Public Health Fund grant will be invested in PHMC's strategic initiatives including business development, research and data innovation, which expand the organization's public health service lines to additional populations.

Public grant recipients must demonstrate an ability to leverage funds through collaboration with other programmatic partners and funding sources, supporting Public Health Fund's commitment to impact population health through system-scale initiatives. The rigorous and competitive submission process attracts dozens of applicants each year.

In addition to the public grant, this year for the first time the Public Health Fund awarded grants to support specific PHMC innovations in key strategic areas. The Innovation Fund followed a competitive grant submission process with a dual goal of promoting creativity within PHMC programs while also strengthening workforce development. The winning organizations and amounts include:
