CEO Richard Cohen Provides Insights

PHILADELPHIA—Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC) announces the release of a video featuring its CEO and President, Richard J. Cohen.  Cohen reflects on three decades years at the helm of one of the one of the largest and most comprehensive public health organizations in the nation. In his 30 years at PHMC, Cohen has led the nonprofit from a Philadelphia-based organization to a public health leader and a nationally-recognized public health institute.

In the nearly four-minute video, Cohen reflects on his legacy as a relationship builder. He talks about how relationships developed with government, foundations, academic institutions, community based organizations and businesses allow an organization to leverage better services for clients.

He also discusses the critical role of public health work to the population as a whole. “Public health is here to serve all communities,” says Cohen in the video. “By having strong services for everyone, everyone gains.” Every year, PHMC staff serve over 125,000 people throughout the Delaware Valley with more than 250 programs. As its leader, Cohen has helped to define PHMC as a mission-driven public health nonprofit that employs the fiscal controls and management structure of a corporation. One of the largest and most comprehensive public health leaders in the nation, PHMC provides a full array of public health services—health promotion, education, research, planning services, technical assistance, outreach and direct services. As Cohen explains in the video, “PHMC doesn’t just focus on one particular issue… but rather integrates a wide variety of services around the people we serve.”

Under Cohen’s leadership, PHMC has developed an affiliate model in which other nonprofits providing important services join the PHMC family of nonprofits.  The most recent affiliations are with Metropolitan Career Center, a nonprofit that provides support and education to develop the workforce and connect students with employers and offers degree programs through its Computer Technology Institute; and Philadelphia Health Care Trust, a foundation that improves the health of the Delaware Valley community as a catalyst for innovative and effective public health initiatives.

The new video provides a glimpse into the approach that has allowed PHMC to grow and expand in service to our communities.  Click to open a new window to view the video.
