S.H.A.P.E. I.T. Event Aims to Educate Local African American Males on Prostate Cancer and Stroke Hypertension
WHAT: The Stroke Hypertension And Prostate Intervention Team (SHAPE IT) will host "Creating a Healthier Village," a workshop on health issues affecting African American men in the North, West and Southwest Philadelphia communities. News media are invited to attend the event, which will bring together several local men's groups, such as Men United for a Better Philadelphia and Concerned Black Men, for a three-hour program featuring interactive demonstrations and educational tools and resources related to hypertension, stroke and prostate health. The workshop aims to educate and empower African American men 35 years and older to make informed decisions about their health and be proactive about pursing healthcare needs, such as cancer screenings.
WHO: SHAPE IT is a program of the Health Promotion Council (HPC), a non-profit corporation that promotes health and disease prevention in Southeastern Pennsylvania through education, outreach and advocacy. HPC is an affiliate of the Philadelphia Health Management Corporation, a nonprofit public health institute that partners builds healthier communities through partnerships with government, business and community-based organizations. African American male health educators from HPC's SHAPE IT Team will facilitate the workshop. Men United for a Better Philadelphia, Concerned Black Men, the Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP and local masons will participate in the workshops.
