Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC) hosted one of Philadelphia’s largest Narcan® trainings at its recent annual employee meeting. More than 500 PHMC employees and staff learned protocols for administering Narcan, the prescription medication that temporarily reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. Everyone in attendance received a Narcan kit, and attendees learned how to identify a person who may be experiencing an overdose, and know the steps to swiftly respond. The training was done in partnership with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health.
More than 1,200 people in Philadelphia died from overdose in 2017 alone. To combat the crisis, Philadelphia Department of Public Health has urged citizens to learn how to use Narcan by providing kits and training. Equipping staff and encouraging everyone to carry the life-saving medication ensures that PHMC’s workforce is educated and prepared to respond to the crisis.
PHMC has undertaken a number of initiatives to address the opioid epidemic and create a healthier Philadelphia through advocacy, research, integrated care and evidence-based treatment approaches.
Laurie Corbin, PHMC Senior Director, Criminal Justice Initiatives, spoke with local Philadelphia media about the training and PHMC’s efforts in the community. Find coverage on KYW 1060 , CBS 3 News and NBC 10.
