Tine Hansen-Turton, Chief Operating Officer of PHMC, wrote a blog post on how the health insurance marketplace and the expansion of Medicaid in Pennsylvania are working for those who really need it.
The blog post, "Obamacare is working for those who need it the most," underscores the effect of Medicare expansion and how the near-poor adults with coverage have increased significantly. In 2012, PHMC's Household Health Survey showed that 27.8 percent of the adult near-poor population (35,000) was uninsured, but in the recent 2015 survey, the percentage had dropped to 9.4 percent. This dramatic decrease illustrates the impact the Affordable Care Act is having on the at-risk and vulnerable populations. In addition, survey results indicate preventive care - critical to an individual's overall health - has also increased in this at-risk population.
